On May 13 and 14, 2000, Secrets hosted its first DVD player Benchmark Event (Shootout I) in Redmond, Washington, where we tested numerous DVD players as to their video, audio, functional, and usability qualities. Audio Precision and Tektronix instrumentation were employed to gather extremely accurate data. The information you will see here is much more extensive than you will ever find in any other A/V magazine, on or off the web.

One of the areas that gets short shrift from many DVD player reviews is the actual usability of the players. Sure, some reviewers talk about the layout of the remote, but only indirectly communicate usability issues . . .

It has long been our feeling that one can learn much more about the
quality of a DVD player by watching lousy DVD movie material than you
can learn by watching great material. Great material tends to look fine
on just about every player . . .
