The first receiver that I remember having in the house was a classic Marantz model. Unfortunately I was too young back then to realize the quality of that component, or even recognize the name, and at some point that receiver was replaced with a much more generic, mass market model with newer features. I am old enough now to know the impact that the name Marantz has on the A/V community, and just about everyone realizes that it commands respect. Here, we review their new AV8003 A/V processor and MM8003 eight-channel power amplifier.

In Part 1 of Flagship Home Theater, I covered the video side with Anthem’s LTX-500 LCoS 1080p projector and the Black Diamond II screen from SI Screens. Now let’s look at the other half of the home theater equation: the sound. To round out my Flagship Home Theater experience, I tested the Anthem Statement D2v A/V Processor and A5 five-channel power amplifier.

Denon's new AVP-A1HDCI sports 12 configurable XLR fully balanced output channels. It handles all the newest codecs, including DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD. Using its Denon Link, along with a DVD player that also has the Denon Link, you can play SACDs with the native DSD bitstream being sent to the processor for decoding (no conversion to PCM like most other systems do). Weighing in at nearly 60 pounds, the A1HDCI has massive built quality, and has wireless network capabilities that will allow it to be receive firmware updates. The A1HDCI's performance and features make it the finest SSP Secrets has ever tested. The accompanying POA-A1HDCI is a 10-channel power amplifier that is designed specifically to go with the SSP. At 132 pounds, it is a monster. Together, these represent state-of-the-art surround sound technology.

Rotel made some interesting choices with their RSP-1069 7.1 SSP. There is an obvious attention to build quality, the processor is heavy, solid and uses quality components throughout. However it is missing some key features found on many processors today, most obvious is the lack of room correction.

The SSP (Surround Sound Processor) world has been a sad place for the last couple of years. All the mass market companies were implementing HDMI on just about every model of receiver they had, but all the high-end SSP companies hesitated, because HDMI versions kept changing.
